Nikon 50mm f/1.4 G VS 1.8 D - hands on review

A Day at the Zoo with my Leica M9-P and 50 Summitar f/2

I used to shoot with a Nikon D2h myself and I had the typical lenses most Nikon shooters had at that time. 4, the 24-70…all big and heavy lenses, especially the 70-200. My son Brandon has really been getting into his Nikon D2h lately. It performed exceptionally well but at the end of the day I was so tired of lugging it all around AND having to push a stroller through the zoo. He doesn’t seem to mind it but he is eyeballing the little Nikon V1 and Sony NEX-7 that I have been carrying around. He hasn’t felt the full pain of lugging it around with a 70-200 VR yet, hahaha. Today my son and I decided to take a photo stroll through the Wildlife World Zoo in Phoenix to enjoy the nice day and get some cool snaps out of it  as well. The 70-200 VR, the 85 1. Many years ago when he was really young we would go to this same Zoo and I would have to rent a stroller....

Need help with choosing a lens (Nikon) for portraits.?

Okay, I've been reading and reading about lens. I would love to get into doing portrait work (of course, I have a ton of practicing to do). Anyways here are the lens that I currently have and been told they are slow.

If you can manually focus, the 50 f/1.8 is a good sharp lens, good for portraits and low light on the crop frame sensor. It will autofocus on the mid-level and higher bodies when you decide to upgrade your camera body.

much of the softness in your images is caused by camera shake - slow shutter speeds and long lens, the last time i looked

the Nikon - Nikkor 50mm f/1.

Yup the 50mm f1.8 lens is great - tack sharp & fast in low light.

Which camera body are you mounting it on?

Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S vs. Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF-D?

My friend just bought a 50mm f/1.4G Nikon and I tried it on my Nikon D90. Lens is quite soft at the maximum aperture and the autofocus just isn't what it should be (but it gets the job done).

The ace is correct.. for flattering portrait shots on APS-C sensor cameras the 50 f/1.4 gives just enough perspective compression to produce quality portraits. Wide aperture lenses tend to be a little soft when shooting wide open.

fhotoace
Wide open at f/1.4, the depth of field is supposed to be shallow (what you are calling soft)

If your plan is to shoot portraits, the 50 is the correct focal length for that.
