Hot on the heels of their success with the X100 (which I reviewed and loved!), Fuji has today officially launched the X10. Where the X100 looked to redefine large sensor, compact prime lens market with it’s APS-C sensor and 24mm f2.0 lens, the X10 seeks to redefine the premium point and shoot market with a 28-112mm zoom lens and a 12MP 2/3″ sensor. To be honest it’s caught me a little bit by surprise because we knew about the X100 for many months before it’s launch and this one seems to have come out of the blue apart from a couple of leaks in the previous week. It seems like a very astute move from Fuji because the X10 has maintained an almost identical look to the x100 but come in about half the price. Clearly there are many differences and you aren’t getting anything close to the same camera but with it’s retro design that people went crazy for it is a unique camera in the market sector it’s launched itself into. They have set themselves further apart from the competition with a 2/3″ sensor that is larger than typical higher end point and shoot camera like a Canon S95 which has a 1/1.7″ sensor and also by the inclusion of a manual zoom lens rather than a slow electronic zoom found on all other P&S cameras. Manual aperture went down very well on the X100 and I think the manual zoom is a great move and it allows you to adjust composition much faster.

Now word on when this will arrive stateside, but the Fujifilm X-S1 is expected to arrive in Japan come 7th of December for a whopping ¥80,000 (~$1,000), and will land in the UK in February of 2012 for £699 (~$1082). Unlike a DSLR with its interchangeable lens, the X-S1 will feature a Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens that will cover a range of 24-624mm (35mm equivalent). It will also feature Intelligent Digital Zoom that Fujifilm is claiming will boost its range up to 1284mm.
