The Leicas have... Compact binoculars are always a compromise compared to full size binoculars, with small exit pupils that make using them fiddly and which compromise the low light viewing. The Leicas also have ocular covers which I at first thought were ridiculous but have come to find very useful at keeping the oculars clean, especially since the bins ride upright in their belt case. I can see the whole field of view with my glasses on through the Leicas, the only compacts I've tried that I can say that about....

Lumix @ KL Bird Park

Despite this I've felt an urge to return to the Bird Park because it provides an opportunity to get my newer cameras close to some interesting birds. So when Panasonic announced they were running a workshop for owners of Lumix G series cameras at the Bird Park, I jumped at the opportunity. His wife had a similar camera with a 14-45, ie almost the same lens. My neighbour had only one lens, a 14-42. Panasonic have come up with a good marketing strategy here. I have a 14-42 lens too. It is the one I almost never use. Perhaps you'll become attached to them and buy one or two....

My Leica owning friends will be pleased to hear that, after using the X100 for a few days now, I a have no doubt that, generally speaking, the Leica M8. 2 is better for image quality, especially with the right lenses. Definitely high iso is something the X100 really does well in, though in a comparison in black and white I made on 12 June, to be uploaded sometime soon, I actually found I preferred the M8 on 1250 clack and white to the X100 at 1600. Colour is a different matter I like to use film because I love it. Using film creates a physical chronicle, by the negative, of the day and the photograph. I am sure he M9 is even better, and I still prefer the images of my film Ms than I do over the M8, generally. Far from it. For may things it is better than the M8 - autofocus, lightness and silence, macro ability and high iso. It's generally a better camera and of course you can use different focal lengths....
